There are health benefits in chia seeds

‘One of the health benefits of chia seeds is weight loss.’
What’s the skinny on this statement?

Remember the Chia Pet? The little clay figures that sprout grass-like ‘fur’ are still the rage at Christmas-time.   Fuuny little gag gift or project for your children, but have you heard the health benefits of chia seeds?  Did you know that the seeds from the same chia plant are being sold online and in health food stores as a weight loss aid?
So what’s the skinny?
Chia seeds are known to help control hunger while they enhance your diet with super-nutrients. But what’s the real story on these nutritious seeds and their ability to help you lose weight?  There’s little evidence to a direct link to losing weight, however adding these nutrient dense seeds will satisfy hunger because you are feeding your body what it needs- thereby controlling cravings, thereby eating less fat and sugar calories needlessly.

The nutritional value of chia seeds

Chia is an edible seed that comes from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, grown in Mexico dating back to Mayan and Aztec cultures.   Chia seeds are a concentrated food containing healthy omega-3 fatty acids, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, antioxidants, and calcium. They are an unprocessed, whole-grain food that can actually be absorbed by the body as seeds.
Nutritional value:
One ounce (2 Tbs) contains:
139 calories
4 grams of protein
9 grams fat
12 grams carbohydrates
11 grams of fiber
plus vitamins and minerals.
These are just some of the health benefits of chia seeds.

The taste of chia seeds is mild and I would say ‘nutty’, so it makes them easy to add to food and shakes and juicing.  People sprinkle them on cereal, add to sauces, vegetables, rice dishes, or yogurt  and baked goods.  In one of his books, Dr.Oz recommends  2 tablespoons of chia seeds twice a day. He also says that the antioxidant activity of chia seeds is higher than any whole food, even blueberries.

Maria J. Clifford, licensed dietitian, PhD talks about the health benefits of chia seeds:

To summarize the health benefits of chia seeds

Enjoy chia seeds to boost the fiber, protein, calcium, antioxidants, and omega-3s in your diet.  There are tremendous health benefits in chis seeds, but don’t rely on them for weight loss.  There is no magic pill (or seed) for weight loss. If you want to lose weight, you’ll need to create and live a healthy lifestyle- calorie-controlled healthy food choices and move your body!!
One caution: If you have seed  allergies or are on high blood pressure medications or blood thinners, you should ask your doctor before adding chia seeds to your diet.
