Okay I’ll give you the fast answer first, then please read on for more help.
Potato chips.  Believe it or not they had to do a study to figure that out.These addicting little guys are among the biggest culprits of causing weight gain. Most definitely one of the foods to avoid!

You already know your waistline is a direct result of how much food you eat. But what kind of foods are we talking about? and can we eat more of one thing to fill up and less of something else and still be full in the belly but not full in the butt? Compare the amount of fat calories found in a bag of potato chips to a bowl of vegetables.

The New England Journal of Medicine documented foods to find the ones that would make you gain more weight.  The foods to avoid, of course.  In the study they took weight and measured participants every four years. They did that for a 20 years, so five times.  They averaged a  weight gain of 16.8 pounds at the end of the 4 years.  Whaaat?  That’s like 84 lbs in 20 years.

Foods To Avoid

These are the worst of the foods in the study that contributed to the weight gain:

  • French fries contributed to the most amount of added pounds
  • Potato chips
  • Sugar – do I really need to say it? and that includes sodas and sugary drinks
  • Processed lunch meats and hot dogs
  • Steaks, burgers and fatty red meat- always buy lean and cut off excess fat

Foods to Eat More Of

So not that these foods will cause you to lose weight, but they will fill you up and have the best nutritional values:

It’s no secret that overeating is one of the main causes of obesity along with its complications and health risks.  But how do we know when we are overeating? Do we have a fuel gauge that tells us when we are full?  We need to be aware when we are overeating and make a better choice before it’s too late and we feel discouraged. You will definitely know you overate when your stomach feels bloated, you suffer indigestion and many other discomforts that we are all well familiar with.


We have basically two sensors:

Our body is smart, the brain… no so much. 🙂
So what are the built-in ‘sensors’ that can help us from overeating?
One in the stomach -for fullness- which is easy to trick by drinking water  before a meal and other sensor is in the brain.  Our brain needs about 20 minutes to sense that we are not hungry anymore; so work on taking about 20 minutes or more to finish your meal and by then you should feel satisfied.
When to drink water to control overeating:

Drink water before and after your meal. 

Do not confuse being full with being satisfied, if you eat very fast, your stomach can get bloated but you will still be hungry.

Drinking your water cold is better for hunger control.

In regards to the increasing obesity epidemic in the United States, it’s from too many high-calorie, high sugar foods and too little time spent exercising. This study shows that a diet lacking enough protein results in overeating.

The protein leverage theory is not far-fetched—eat less protein, eat more calories from carbohydrate and fats. In the last 50 years the protein percentage in Americans’ diets declined, and was paired alongside a 16 percent increase in total caloric intake from fat,  and carbohydrates.

The Study:

Twenty two healthy men and women participated in three sessions where all meals were provided and their eating monitored. The foods contained 10, 15, or 25% calories from protein. Fat was at 30%, and carbohydrate was  60, 55, or 45% of calories.  When comparing what they ate on 10% protein vs. 15% protein, it was an average of 12 percent more calories.

Result: 70 percent of the caloric increase in the subjects on the lower protein diet came from eating snack foods. At that rate, their weight would increase by 2 pounds per month.
