One of the most important things you can do to improve your rankings in the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) is to ensure your website is optimized to your keywords,  more targeted toward the topic.

Page Title

Each web page on your site should have its own distinct title. A title should tell the search engines (and the reader!) what the page is about. Make sure to work in a couple keywords that are specific to that page.


Your copy, links and the images should all be constructed to give the search engines an idea about your blog’s singular reason for being.

Once you have a list of keywords or key phrases, you may then begin your message.  A good rule of thumb here is to focus on a few keywords per page.   Do not pack your site with your keywords. The top search engines have algorithms in place that will penalize for ‘stuffing’. Keyword stuffing is considered to be a “black hat” optimization action and is great way to get your website banned from the search engines. Not recommended.)

Links and Images

Descriptive links are another great way to tell the search engines what your site is about . They carry a good amount of weight and should be used wisely.  Rather than saying ‘click here’ or ‘read more’, build a little more information into the link by saying ‘read more about nature’s stress relievers’ (or whatever your topic.) Assuming ‘healthy weight loss’ was one of our key words, you just gave that search engine a little more reason to promote the site when someone searches healthy weight loss.

Even the images you use can build get more traffic for your blog or website.
For example, if you have a nutrition company, don’t just use a picture of successful client the way it came off your digital camera… ‘LD3459.jpg’  Search engines use file name you give your picture. A better file name might be “wendy-lost-50-pounds.jpg” or ‘amazing-weight-loss.jpg’ This same principle holds true for every file name you use on your site.

Focus on being clear, to the point, stay on subject and keep it exciting .  Add humor to the mix if it is who you are. Be authentic!   It is a commitment not only to yourself, but to your audience and to the blog itself.

Be consistent, always sharing valuable content.  You want them to learn, develop, grow, from what you share.  If you have just started blogging for business you may be uncomfortable with it, maybe not knowing what to say at first.  It may feel like work in the beginning, but it will become enjoyable! Your efforts will pay off and you will be successful.

Include Videos When Blogging for Business

Businesses large and small can benefit from video blogging. A quality ‘vlog’ that’s updated regularly will increase your web presence and draw in conversions. Show customers how to use the products/services that you offer with how-to videos. 10 Commandments of Blogging for Business

1. Save the drama for your mama.  Don’t use your blog as a soapbox.

When blogging for business, don’t use your blog like a personal soundboard or journal. It should be used to share quality information and relevant, compelling information that can help others to solve their problems.

2. Use your own words

People share ideas and subjects but they shouldn’t share the same exact words. Your words, in the way that you feel them, is what makes you unique.  Your words is what will give you your own ‘style’ of writing. Take an idea or concept and own it.  If you do ‘adopt’ from other bloggers, give them credit where credit is due.

3. Visit your blog daily or at least twice a week.

We all have days when we don’t feel like blogging for business. You’ve got to honor the commitment that you’ve made to making your blog work. There will be times when it won’t be easy to feel inspired.  Take a moment to sit in a quiet room with no noise, relax.  My best thoughts come while doing something that I love to do.  Take a note pad or use your smart phone’s quick voice  app when a thought comes to you. In working on how to make extra money from home by blogging, this is crucial.

4. Be creative

Think of your blog as something fun and creative -write knowing that it can help others to achieve their goals or solve a problem.

5. Reach the reader’s heart

If you want your audience to react on an emotional level, you need to be authentic and sensitive in your writing.  Tell a story that really happened, and share what you learned from it.  It’s okay to be human! This is still relationship building.

6. Use images in your blog

Many if not most of your readers will be visual people and adding a picture or graphic will help them to visualize what you are trying to convey.. and hey, some folks read because they like to look at the pictures! 😉

7. Leave a comments box on your post

Encourage your readers to comment and engage.  Let them know they are welcome and feel like they ‘belong’ on your page. Between their feedback and reading other people’s blogs, you will no doubt improve your own writing skills.

8. Connect with your audience

You’ve got to get your readers to relate with you. Get inside their heads, get them to want to come back to your blog over and over again. Ask your readers questions that provoke them to engage and leave comments.

9. Make a difference

Our time is valuable. Be sure to give your visitors something of value that can make a difference in their lives.

10. Offer your RSS Feed

Invite your readers to subscribe to your content. Have a link or icon for your RSS feed.  Use additional social media tools to make it easy to share your blog with others.

Draw a vertical line down a piece of paper or word doc. so you have two rows, or columns.  Column A will be for your Pros and then Column B for the Cons.  Remember this is about how to make extra money from home and continue to make more money!  Ask yourself things like what the types of internet marketing company or online store may have  products you would like to sell. The amount of commission they pay could be one of your Pros and Cons. What could earn you the extra money quicker?   You must choose your foundation to learn affiliate marketing. Know Your GMOs!  aka Genetically Modified Foods

The Ugly: I’m going to begin and end with the ugly, because that is what genetically modified foods are. (IMHO)  Please read this entire article, facts you should know. Let me give you the ‘reader’s digest’ version of the Ugly about genetically modified foods. GMOs are slowly making us sick and yes- killing us.  Below I have posted a documentary that will give you the full picture.  Essentially, GMO seeds are infused with poison (the same poison as in Round-up, the terrific stuff that kills weeds dead).  When a bug eats corn for instance, the bug eats the corn and his stomach explodes and it dies. WE ARE EATING the SAME CORN.  The Cows the You EAT are being Fed the same GMO- Poisoned- corn. Get the picture?? You may have heard the term ‘Round-up Corn‘. Now you know what it is.

The ‘Good’: GMO is short for Genetically Modified Organisms.  Genetically modified foods is what we are talking about here today. A GMO plant has been genetically altered and is most often found in crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton and canola.  The plants are modified using genetic engineering techniques. The main purpose for this is to resist herbicides.  The benefit is for farmers,  for less work so more crops can be harvested. There is Nothing ‘Good’ to those of us eating these foods. The Bad: One major problem with GMOs is that once planted, they run the risk of contaminating other crops planted nearby.  This is called ‘Genetic Pollution’. Up to 80% of organic farmers in the Midwest (where there are millions of acres of GM corn and soybean crops)  reported genetically modified foods planted in the area bring GMOs to fields where they are not wanted.  Winds and water runoff are full of seeds and easily plant themselves into their organic farmland and produce unwanted genetically modified food plants.  Often the farmers don’t know this has happened.

More Bad: Congress gave the FDA the authority to regulate non-meat foods.  Meat safety is at USDA.  FDA and USDA are not going to be combined into a new food safety agency. FDA has too much to do with too little money and it faces budget cuts unless Congress fixes things.   The FDA addressed the outcry by folks for labeling. FDA does not label, unless mandated by Congress (like the Nutrition Facts)  for information that they think  important to the public to know. As for GMOs, the FDA ruled that there was no scientific difference between GMO and non-GMO foods. Therefore, there was no need for labeling. You can argue the facts, you can argue the law, but the Courts have upheld FDA’s ability to make these decisions.  Is public comment rule-making perfect?  No. Does everyone have a right to be heard? Yes.  Does everyone agree with FDA? Never, but life goes on and the agency regulates, too much for some, too little for others .  Should we be mad as hell?  You bet we should. Genetically Modified Foods Labeling Program

From a recent NY Times article: ‘Genetic Changes to Food May Get Uniform Labeling’.   Executives from Pepsi-Co  Con-Agra and about 20 other major food companies, as well as Wal-Mart and advocacy groups that favor labeling, attended a meeting in January in Washington.  The results have brought about actions  in Washington State, Connecticut, Vermont, New Mexico and Missouri, and a growing consumer boycott of some organic or “natural” brands owned by major food companies.  Roughly 20 states are considering labeling requirements. Regardless of any legal *requirement*,  if a consumer wants to know the origin of their food, they should not have to fight for the info.  If Stevie Wonder decides he wants to wear blue, but his assistant thinks it doesn’t matter since he can’t see the difference anyway, doesn’t Mr. Wonder still have the right to be dressed in the color of his choice? “Laura and I are sad to announce that our Scottish Terrier, Barney, has passed away. The little fellow had been suffering from lymphoma and after twelve and a half years of life, his body could not fight off the illness.

Barney and I enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to accompany me when I fished for bass at the ranch. He was a fierce armadillo hunter.

He starred in Barney Cam and gave the American people Christmas tours of the White House. Barney greeted Queens, Heads of State, and Prime Ministers. He was always polite and never jumped in their laps.

Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House. He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal.”

I Lost a Friend Today. Definition of a Friend

My Friend Cathy

 Losing a friend is never easy.

Today I want to say a few words about my friend Cathy.  As far back as I can remember when growing up in Amityville, Cathy was a laid back, ‘organic’ kind of girl.  She was the big sister of one of my closest and best friends of my life, Teresa.  Cathy was never one to gossip or say malicious things about others. She never judged, she never wanted to be a bother to others.  Cathy liked to smile and she loved her family.  She was a giver.  She was a mother, a daughter, a big sister.   And how can I leave this out?! Cathy was Italian!

From early in my junior high school years I had the good fortune of meeting Terece and quickly became close lifetime friends.   Two Italian girls with unrelenting spirit- what a combo!  Teresa’s mom was so much like my own mother… kind, non-judgmental and a great cook who wasn’t afraid to use her wooden spoon on her kids bottoms!  Ha-ha. 🙂  Thanks to Facebook we have all been able to reconnect after about 30+ years.  Children grown and relocated, yet it was like we never lost touch. We picked right back up from where we left.  Except Cathy added one thing to her life that the rest of us had not, thankfully.  Cathy found out she had cancer.  They say that God will not give us more than we can handle and I’ve seen this to be true again and again.  Cathy was the one who had the fortitude to fight.  And fight she did.   And always with a positive outlook.   Even as recent as 5 days ago Cathy was ready to come out on the other side of her chemo and win again.  This time the cancer won.
I lost a friend today. On this day a mother lost her daughter, a daughter lost her mom, and sisters lost their big sister.  friend

On this Sunday morning, January 27, 2013 another Angel got her wings.

God speed Cathy.  Well done, good and faithful servant.  You will be loved and remembered forever. Fly to Jesus Cathy…. on wings like eagles.♥

It wasn’t that long ago that global hunger was one of the biggest health crises affecting our planet. In fact, it was just 30 years ago that nations across the globe banded together to help relieve hunger, marked by the iconic song “We Are the World.”
Needless to say, times have certainly changed.

While hunger is still very much an issue in many parts of the world, obesity statistics show that obesity has overtaken hunger as the biggest health crisis facing the planet. The Global Burden of Disease Study was a collaboration of 486 researchers from 302 institutions in 50 different countries who worked together to evaluate overall global health, trends in disease and causes of death.

In addition to this disturbing news about the worldwide obesity epidemic, researchers noticed a rising number of deaths from non-communicable diseases.  Additionally, heart disease and stroke caused one in three deaths worldwide, compared to one in five in 1990.

Diabetes caused 1.3 million deaths—twice as many as in 1990. Not surprisingly, the dramatic rise in non-communicable diseases like heart problems and diabetes can be directly attributed to the higher obesity statistics of people in the world.

Despite this rise in non-communicable diseases, life expectancy among men and women has risen. However, this isn’t as great as it sounds.  Even though life expectancies in both men and women have gone up, the average person now spends the last 14 years of their life living with a terminal illness or in pain due to their poor lifestyle choices and obesity.

What Do These Findings Mean?

For the first time in history, our children’s life expectancy is lower than our own.
Due to the rise in childhood obesity, the decline of nutrition in our schools and fat laden foods on our own kitchen tables, more children than ever now have Type II Diabetes.  Most children today have 4-5 specialist doctors as compared to 20 years ago when one family physician was the norm.obesity-in-america-map-2012

This is not just a problem in the United States.  In terms of risk factors for disease, high body mass index/high obesity statistics is the leading risk factor in Australasia and southern Latin America, but also ranks high in North Africa, the Middle East.3

What this research shows is that much of the world has adopted the “western” lifestyle, which consists of an unhealthy diet filled with processed, sugar- and trans-fat laden foods, topped with lack of exercise and a general “couch potato” existence. This has translated to a larger-than-ever number of people dealing with obesity and the resulting effects—cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, to name a few.

All this translates to skyrocketing health care costs over the next 20 years. By some estimates, non-communicable diseases will cost more than $30 trillion to treat.

Heard enough? How many more studies and reports do we have to do and read to understand that the focus of medicine MUST switch from treating symptoms and diseases to preventing them from developing in the first place. Okay I’ll give you the fast answer first, then please read on for more help.
Potato chips.  Believe it or not they had to do a study to figure that out.These addicting little guys are among the biggest culprits of causing weight gain. Most definitely one of the foods to avoid!

You already know your waistline is a direct result of how much food you eat. But what kind of foods are we talking about? and can we eat more of one thing to fill up and less of something else and still be full in the belly but not full in the butt? Compare the amount of fat calories found in a bag of potato chips to a bowl of vegetables.

The New England Journal of Medicine documented foods to find the ones that would make you gain more weight.  The foods to avoid, of course.  In the study they took weight and measured participants every four years. They did that for a 20 years, so five times.  They averaged a  weight gain of 16.8 pounds at the end of the 4 years.  Whaaat?  That’s like 84 lbs in 20 years.

Foods To Avoid

These are the worst of the foods in the study that contributed to the weight gain:

  • French fries contributed to the most amount of added pounds
  • Potato chips
  • Sugar – do I really need to say it? and that includes sodas and sugary drinks
  • Processed lunch meats and hot dogs
  • Steaks, burgers and fatty red meat- always buy lean and cut off excess fat

Foods to Eat More Of

So not that these foods will cause you to lose weight, but they will fill you up and have the best nutritional values:

  • Vegetables – Eat fresh or frozen, never canned, and choose the green leafy kind. Make kale chips instead of Lays.

New York City Mayor Ed Koch had Chutzpah

I’m thinking fondly of Ed Koch today.. remembering him at the NYC St. Patty’s Day parade every year.

Ed Koch died on February 1, 2013 at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia Hospital . He was 88 years young.  A spokesman said he died that Friday morning of congestive heart failure.

Sometimes said to be combative and ‘acid-tongued’,  I will always think of  this politician as a man who kept his sense of humor through it all.  He  held a three year term at City Hall and during that time he rescued the city of New York from near-financial ruin.  Ed Koch had enough New York chutzpah for the rest of the planet.  From back when I as a kid and into adulthood, Ed Koch was the Mayor of NY.  He always seemed like ‘regular guy’, but you did not want to mess with his city!

As written by Mariam Brillantes of the Wall Street Journal, “Ed Koch was so proud of his already-prepared tombstone at his burial site in Manhattan that he made sure I had a copy of the inscription when I interviewed him on Jan. 18 at his Midtown Manhattan law office, the day before he was hospitalized. The inscription reads, in part: “He was fiercely proud of his Jewish faith. He fiercely defended the City of New York, and he fiercely loved its people.” Also inscribed on his tombstone is a quote from Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl:“My father is Jewish, my mother is Jewish, I am Jewish.” (Daniel Pearl, 2002, just before he was beheaded by a Muslim terrorist.)

Ed Koch wanted to be buried at a “bustling cemetery.”  At his burial site on 155thStreet and Amsterdam Ave you can find a stone bench and a tree. He said he hoped people will visit.  We will Mr. Mayor, we will.

High fiber foods that fill you up

If you’re looking drop some body fat it’s helpful to eat healthy foods that fill you up.  Working on losing weight can be no fun at all if your diet leaves you constantly hungry. Keeping healthy foods that fill you up around can help keep you on track on your journey without being down in the mouth. (Pardon the pun 🙂 )

Always begin with a salad before your meal. You will eat about 12% fewer calories that way, than if you jump right into your meal.  The water and fiber in the veggies help make them foods that fill you up. Chewing your food more gives your brain time to catch up to your stomach to know it’s full. The vitamins and minerals in dark leafy greens is an extra benefit.
Tip: Salad dressing adds fat and calories, not salad !!  Have fat free, sugar-free dressing on the side, and dip salad into your dressing, don’t pour it on.

In the same way as the salad, start your lunch or dinner with a bowl of a low sodium broth or vege soup. These soups are foods that fill you up and help keep you from double dipping into the main course..
Tip: Restaurant soups and canned/boxed  soups are typically very high in salt/sodium. Read labels! I recommend a low sodium broth type soup at home, made by Knorr.  No creamed soups!

Green veggies.
Generously add extra servings of high-fiber, low-calorie vegetables by mixing them into any meal. Piling on additional vegetables like broccoli, mushrooms, shredded carrots, and spinach can give your food some extra bulk that will make it more satisfying.
Tip: Kale is king!! Eat lots of it- organic and raw if you can and if you cook, boil or use olive oil.

High Protein Foods that fill you up

Studies found that people who eat  fish for lunch are likely to feel full the rest of the day, and so they ate less at dinner than those  who ate red meat during the day.
Tip: Fried fish is a definite no-no!  Always bake, broil or grill fish for healthy foods that fill you up.  Remember to use fresh lemon, never tarter sauce!

Eggs are another terrific high protein food.  People who have eggs at  breakfast will eat fewer calories the rest of the day.
Tip: It’s the yolks that have the fat- eat 3 egg whites to every yolk. Refrain from frying and stick to a healthy cooking method, like hard-boiling or poached.

These health-packed legumes contain both soluble and insoluble fiber as well as a significant amount of protein. This dynamic duo makes beans one of the best foods that fill you up,  also lowering your cholesterol at the same time.
Tip: Legumes are great for low glycemic diets. White beans, black beans, kidney and garbanzo beans (chic peas) as well as all other legumes are low-glycemic index choices.

Apples and Oranges.
Apples and oranges are the best fruit choices to make you feel fuller longer. So if you need something sweet after your meal, an apple or an orange is your best choice.
